“I have this little substance abuse problem…expensive footwear” ― Carrie Bradshaw
It’s true. And as simple as that. Yet, it’s not.
Women and shoes go a long way back. It is a twisted relation, where despite the agony and pain, the love and dedication one has towards the other does not falter. Our history is filled with stories about women going to painful lengths in order to get “desirable” feet. Back in the day, Chinese women had a tradition whereby they would break their knuckles, bind their feet and deform it. This practice would make her more desirable, and worthy of matrimony.
Centuries later, this relationship is as strong as ever. Now, it is more glamorous, with feet bind in stilettos as high as 10 inch, and Swarovski all around. And that makes one wonder, why? What is it about shoes that have charmed women beyond reason?
We put our heads together, and tried to figure it out.
The power of transformation: Every shoe has a personality, and women take over its persona whenever they wear a particular shoe. It is the most flexible item in their wardrobe, which can make them a new person every day.
Boost of Confidence: Higher the heel, higher the confidence. Despite the discomfort, many women would choose to let go of a finger than their stilettos, as it is a source of confidence and self-esteem.
“More” Equal: It is not only feminist who want women to be considered equal to men. Most of the fairer gender harbors this wish secretly and climb on heels to look in the eye of the opposite gender.
Perceived Notion: It’s instant-glam! Shoes can transport a woman from drab to fab in less than 5 seconds! Who wouldn’t bow down to a power this potent?
These are just a handful of many reasons that explain women’s obsession with shoes. Lets just accept this twisted relationship as it, and know that it is o stay for a long long time to come.
Good to know:
- There are almost 49 types of shoes in the world
- A woman owns 20 pairs of shoes on an average
- Nearly 64 percent of women who report hind-foot pain wear high heels regularly.
Having said that, women and stilettos are inseparable. Deal with it!
